Guidance on career classification

Please use the guidance below in conjunction with your own informed judgement to select the most appropriate career stage classification.

Early career

  • Academia: Experience ranging from post doc to just starting out building a lab/team. Typically have not led a work package worth more than £100k. Focusing on building a research profile.
  • Industry/NHS: Within the initial stages of their career, typically within eight years of completing their highest research degree, but not yet in a senior or leadership research role. Engages in applied or translational research aimed at solving practical problems, developing products, or improving processes within the industry.

Mid-career

  • Academia: Typically 8-20 years post-PhD, has received significant funding and lead their own research groups or large projects. Has built an independent research profile, including a track record of publications and successful grant applications. Has a permanent position and is working up the university grades. Typically not financially secure.
  • Industry/NHS: Usually 8–20 years’ experience since their highest degree. Typically transitioned from technical execution to leadership and strategic influence.

Established

  • Academia: Comfortable, with an established reputation and secure funding.
  • Industry/NHS: Comfortable, with an established reputation and secure leadership position.
